Oor ThelmiAbout
Thelmi Bekker het op die Vrystaatse platteland grootgeword, en daar lê die wortels van haar werk. Sy skilder wat sy elke dag om haar het — die veld en die lug, haar tuin, haar diere, die stil strate van ’n dorp — en die skeppende gees loop deur alles wat sy aanraak. Sy is self-geleerd: haar skilderye is spontaan en eerlik, vertel graag ’n storie, en gebruik kleur eerder om te laat voel as om te beskryf.
Haar huis in Harrismith, aan die voet van Platberg, is self deel daarvan — dit het al vir sy interieurs in tydskrifte verskyn, en die dorp se toerismegids noem haar tussen die plaaslike kunstenaars om na uit te kyk. Maar dit is die kleiner dinge wat bly: hoop, genade, en die vreugde van gewone dinge.
Thelmi Bekker grew up in the rural Free State, and that is where her work comes from. She paints what is around her every day — the veld and the sky, her garden, her animals, the quiet streets of a small town — and the same creative spirit runs through everything she touches. She is self-taught: her paintings are spontaneous and honest, fond of telling a story, and use colour to make you feel something rather than to describe it.
Her home in Harrismith, at the foot of Platberg, is part of that work too — it has been photographed for its interiors in magazines, and the town’s travel guide lists her among the local artists to look out for. But it is the smaller things that stay: hope, grace, and the joy of everyday things.

She painted the cover art for the books of Leon Strachan, Harrismith’s best-known writer — covers a reviewer likened to Marc Chagall’s small-town scenes.
